About Tauranga

Nau-Mai-Haere-Mai

The Coastal Bay of Plenty has been a favourite Kiwi holiday destination for generations. Our beaches are the best in New Zealand and our sun, surf and sand have helped to shape our laid-back lifestyle.

Māori first discovered this area in the 13th Century and named what is now the region’s capital city ‘Tauranga’ meaning ‘place of rest or anchorage’. Tauranga is now New Zealand’s fifth-largest and fastest-growing city, and home to around 140,000 people. Our city sits right on the water’s edge and is well-known for its blue skies, warm climate, sparkling harbour and relaxed lifestyle.

The Coastal Bay of Plenty has an abundance of outdoor adventures to enjoy, including thousands of kilometres of walking and cycling trails with stunning scenery. There’s also 125 kilometres of beautiful coastline and beaches. Visit the Bay’s famous Mount Main Beach, Pāpāmoa Beach, Ōhope Beach and Pilot Bay – all voted among the top ten best beaches in New Zealand*. You can learn to surf, kayak or paddleboard almost anywhere.

To top it off, the Coastal Bay of Plenty has a thriving food scene with wonderful cafés and restaurants. There are plenty of activities like blokarts, drift trikes, marine wildlife tours and scenic flights to keep the whole family happy and entertained.
