Competitors must be over 10 years of age and under 13 years of age, as at 31st December the year before the tournament year. Competitor’s birthdates will be required on school registration documentation. For the 2025 Zespri AIMS Games, the eligible birth years are 2012, 2013, and 2014.
Students may compete in more than one sporting code, provided they are in line with the permitted code crossovers.
Timetable allowances will not be made for any competitors, and it is the sole responsibility of the school to check for programming conflicts.
Students participating in the 2025 Zespri AIMS Games can only compete in one team sport. This means that students competing in Hockey strictly cannot also compete in the following sporting codes – 3x3 Basketball, 5-Aside Basketball, Football, Futsal, Netball, Rip Rugby, Rugby Sevens or Water Polo.
All teams will be placed into pools based on a combination of 2024 seedings and a geographic spread. Seedings will be at the tournament organiser’s discretion.

There will be a compulsory online umpire briefing at all venues on Monday 1st September at 8:00 AM.
Umpire registration details will be required to be completed online by Wednesday 23rd July.
We encourage school teams to bring junior umpires to gain experience from this tournament (mentoring and coaching provided).
Participating teams are required to provide an experienced umpire, or should an umpire be required, then there is an additional cost of $1,000.00 (NZ$) for the week (indication of requiring a paid umpire is to be recorded and paid for on the initial registration form).
Guideline on the required level of experience for junior hockey umpires -
Please ensure your umpire has the required experience to attend this tournament – namely, umpiring regularly at a level no less than Intermediate grade with a clear knowledge of hockey rules. Zespri AIMS Games is a great forum to foster junior umpires as they will be assisted by umpire coaches, but it is vital they have sufficient experience to cope with five days of tournament hockey.
The intentions of the 7-aside game format are to increase the speed and flow of general game play, to create even amounts of attacking and defending opportunities for both teams, and to increase the participation in the game by all players.
All normall 11-aside rules apply with the exception of the following amended rules regarding penalty corners, 1v1 challenge and long corners. These have been altered to increase the conversion rate of goal scoring opportunities. All games must be played with safety being paramount - it is the responsibility of all participants to ensure that games are played without dangerous, unsportsmanlike participation - we encorgae all to embrace a fun, fair and safe hockey experience!
1. Long Corners
1.1 A Long Corner is awarded if the ball is unintentionally touched by a defender before going over the backline. Play will resume with the attacking team free hit in line with the top of the circle opposite where the ball went out.
Reminder: the ball must travel 5m before entering the circle.
1.2 If the ball is intentionally played over the backline by a defender or goalkeeper, a penalty corner is to be awarded.
2. Penalty Corners
2.1 A penalty corner will consist of 4 defending players (3 defenders and goal keeper) in the goal and attacking players around the outside of the circle.
2.2 All remaining opposition players must be positioned inside the opposite goal circle until the penalty corner is commenced.
2.3 All other normal penalty corner rules apply.
2.4 Ball to be placed on ‘drag-out’ mark on back line indicated by orange mark on the turf perimeter board.
2.5 Defenders are encouraged to wear face masks for penalty corners but ensure these are removed safely as soon as possible after the PC is over.
2.6 If awarded just before the half or full-time hooter, the penalty corner must be completed.
3. Penalty Stroke/Challenge 1v1
3.1 For intentional fouls inside the circle or an infringement by a defender stopping a certain goal.
3.2 Attacker starts with the ball at the top of the circle – Goalkeeper starts in the goal – all other players (of both teams) are in the other circle.
3.3 On the whistle, normal play resumes – the attacker must travel 5m with the ball before a goal can be scored – the danger rule applies at all times.
3.4 If awarded just before the half or full-time hooter, the 1v1 challenge must be completed.
4. Sideline
4.1 Yellow wooden planks are used to divide the pitch into two ½ field pitches. If the ball makes contact with this planking it remains in play. However, if the ball passes over the opposite sideline the normal hit-in rule applies.
5. Penalty Shoot-Out Competition
5.1 Normal shoot-out competition applies, with the exception that, for Mixed Teams, there must be a minimum of two female and two male players in the shoot-out team.
5.2 Shoot-out will start from a mark 3 meters from the top of the circle.
6. Additional Rules
6.1 All games must include a fully padded goalkeeper. Substitution of a goalkeeper for a field player is only permitted in the final five minutes of a game.
6.2 Reverse hit (tomahawk) is not permitted in the Zespri AIMS Games for safety reasons. This is a difficult skill to master which requires a level of experience and maturity – we need to keep the game safe! However, the reverse slide/flat-stick pass is accepted.
6.3 Players must not play the ball dangerously or in a way which leads to dangerous play – a high ball is also considered dangerous when it causes legitimate evasive action by players and will be managed by umpires accordingly – again, we need to keep the game safe!
6.4 Mixed Division must have a minimum of two girls and two boys field players on the turf at all times.
7. Generic Rules
7.1 All games are 2 x 20-minute halves – 3 minute half time.
7.2 All games controlled by a timekeeper.
7.3 There will be a 7-minute break between games for warm-ups and turf watering (as required).
7.4 Teams must wear numbered shirts and must be registered to this number.
7.5 Mouth guards and shin pads are mandatory.
7.6 Defenders are encouraged to wear face masks for penalty corners which must be removed immediately after the penalty corner is over.
7.7 Teams are responsible for their own first aid. Medical personnel will be stationed at the turf. Ice will be available at Tournament Control, and in all dugouts. All team managers are required to have their team medical forms with them at all games.
The top three placed teams in the three 7 aside divisions will be presented with their certificates and medals (Mixed B Division will receive certificates only) at the Tauranga Hockey Centre at the conclusion of the finals on Friday 5th September.
